Summer is the season of delicious soups, hearty meats and our favorite comfort foods. While fresh mushrooms are always our top recommendation, it's not always feasible to keep them stocked up. While certainly delicious, fresh mushrooms have a shelf life of about a week when placed in the refrigerator. By freezing mushrooms, you can always consume these delicacies conveniently.

In this article, we'll explain how to preserve mushrooms by freezing them, and how to cook frozen mushrooms - explaining how to thaw and reheat them for maximum nutritional value and optimal flavor.

When thawing and reheating mushrooms, follow our expert advice on:

1. Use them straight out of the refrigerator.

Mushrooms are not like meat: you don't necessarily need to take them out of the freezer to thaw before cooking with them. In fact, if you move frozen mushrooms to the refrigerator for a few days or leave them at room temperature on the counter for a few hours, they probably won't taste very good! During the thawing process, mushrooms naturally release moisture, which can make them soggy when thawed.

Instead, take the mushrooms directly out of the refrigerator and reheat them in a hot pan. If making a soup, put them directly in the hot broth. If it's pasta night, add them directly to the crushed tomatoes in the pan.

When making gravy, stir-fry or salsa, simply add the mushrooms after creating the recipe and then gently heat them, allowing them to gradually come up to temperature before serving.

2. Make sure they are frozen properly.

Freezing mushrooms is not difficult, however, the first mistake people make is not preparing them properly for freezing.

If you try to freeze mushrooms that are almost out of date, they may become slimy when they are thawed. Or, if you don't sauté them before freezing, they may take on a rubbery texture after freezing.

In this way, how you prepare frozen mushrooms can have a huge impact on flavor, nutrient content and texture. 3. Do not microwave or bake.

Remember, if you follow our instructions above, you've already sautéed the mushrooms before freezing them - so they don't need to be "recooked". Just mix them and heat them up as you get closer to the end of the meal. If you recook mushrooms, you may compromise their nutritional value, flavor and texture. Just reheat them quickly and you're ready to enjoy!

4. Know how long to freeze them for.

The next mistake many people make is forgetting to date their freezer bags. Even the best prepared mushrooms can be frozen if left in cold temperatures for too long.

How long do mushrooms last? If prepared and stored correctly, your mushrooms can be kept in the freezer for up to six months. Check out these tips for storing mushrooms in the refrigerator to make sure they are properly preserved and can be kept in the cold for months.
